Habitat Cooler regions of northern hemisphere. Distributed in Kulu and the Nilgiris.

English European Beech, Common Beech.

Action Seeds and fatty oil— used externally in skin diseases, rheumatism and gout. Seeds— poisonous. Saponins cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms.

Leaves also contain saponins.

Wood tar— antiseptic, analgesic; mixed with talc, used as a dusting powder for gangrene and bed sores.
