TEST FOR BILE SALTS

Aim

To detect bile salts in the given sample of urine.

Apparatus

Test tubes, sulphur powder

Procedure

Fill the urine upto 3/4 of clean test tube. Sprinkle little dry sulphur powder over surface about 1/2 inch height. If the bile salt is present sulphur particles will sink. In normal urine sulphur particles will float. Bile salts usually present are sodium glycocholite and sodium taurocholate.

Question:

1. Why does sulphur powder float in the surface of urine in a specimen not having bile salts?
