Botanical name - Swertia chirata

Description - The herb of Swertia chirata Buch-Ham. Of the family Gentianaceae is used as chirata.

Chemical Constituents- It contains bitter substance chiratin and ophelic acid

Use - It is bitter and reputed as tonic.. In the southern states, sometimes, Andrographis paniculata Nees. Of the family Acanthaceae is used, it contains kalamegin and bitter substance named andrographolide.
