Description - Ocimum basilicum is an erect, aromatic, smooth with nearly glabrous branching herb and green or purplish coloured. Simple, opposite leaves entire or toothed, glabrous on both sides. White flowers in simple racemes often thyrsoid. Fruits ellipsoid nutlets black and pitted.
Chemical Constituents- Plant yields volatile oil consisting of Mecinnamate methylchavicol, linalool, cineole, ocimene, borneol, sambulene, safrole, epibicyclosesquiphellandrene
Use - Plant stomachic, alexipharmic, antipyretic, diaphoretic, expectorant, carminative, stimulant and anthelmintic. Leaf juice given in ringworms; seeds demulcent, stimulant, diaphoretic, diuretic, used in piles.
